Soling World Championship - Huge winds at the third day of Soling Worlds |
BALATON, HUNGARY-(21-5-2003) Because of the stormy morning wind, the Race Committee postponed the race. Around midday the wind calmed down so the fleet sailed out.
The weather favoured the Ukrainian Pitchugin, from the first upwind mark he led the race so he could win with full of confidence. In the second downwind section the north-westerly wind strengthened back and it made the race more difficult for the sailors because of the strong pressures, as it’s typical at Lake Balaton. Sometimes it’s strength reached the Bft. 7.
This tendency hasn’t changed then so ten boat had no choice but to give up the race. In between such name as Winkler, - who leads the Soling Worlds at the moment - because his jib’s halyard got torn.
Finally Pitchugin won the 5th race, Balázs Gyenese finished on the 2nd, and Auteried on the 3rd place.
Winkler still leads, but with equal points in front of Pitchugin, the Austrian boat is on the 3rd position, and the best Hungarian team, led by Balázs Gyenese is the 4th at the moment.
Sergey Pitchugin impressions:
I’m very happy, that the Race Committee decided to start the today’s race. It’s very very important. It’s a World Championship and for the International Soling Class it’s very essential to sail between every wind condition.
We’re not thinking about, in what kind of wind conditions we have to race, it can be any kind of during a race and the good result is the most important thing between any conditions.
